What does Google want to see on your website?
Wednesday, January 24, 2024 by Jonathan Shank

Google has always championed high-quality content as the cornerstone of its ranking algorithm. For author websites, this emphasis takes on a literary dimension. The search engine prioritizes content that resonates with readers’ intents and inquiries. Comprehensive book descriptions that delve into themes, characters, and narratives are invaluable. However, it's not just about your books. Engaging blog posts that offer readers insights into your writing process, discussions on genre trends, or deeper dives into the subjects you write about can elevate your site's relevancy. Authentic author biographies and personal reflections can foster trust and connection, signaling to Google that your content is both authoritative and unique. Regular updates are crucial. Consistently releasing fresh articles or updates about your writing journey indicates to Google that your site is an active resource for literary enthusiasts. In essence, to rank favorably, authors should craft their website content as meticulously as they would their published works, ensuring it serves both their readership and Google's discerning algorithms.

Goole Wants Content that “E-E-A-T”s

Google's E-E-A-T concept stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. It plays a critical role in understanding how content is evaluated for quality and, subsequently, for ranking in search results. Here's a breakdown of each element:

Experience:

  • Concept for Authors: Experience refers to the firsthand knowledge or encounters an author has with a particular topic, setting, or theme. It's the embodiment of the saying "write what you know," wherein an author's personal interactions, journeys, or trials, can offer a richer, more authentic narrative.

  • Relation to Author Websites: To showcase experience, authors can incorporate personal anecdotes, behind-the-scenes insights, or real-life inspirations for their stories in their blog content. Sharing personal experiences related to the book's setting, characters, or even the writing journey itself can resonate deeply with readers, making the content more relatable and genuine. Furthermore, for authors who write non-fiction, discussing personal involvement or firsthand interactions with the subject matter can greatly enhance credibility.

Expertise:

  • Concept for Authors: An author's expertise is reflected in their depth of knowledge about the topics they write about, whether it's a fictional universe they've created or non-fiction topics they've researched.

  • Relation to Author Websites: Authors should ensure that their website content, including blog posts, showcases their understanding and command over their genre, themes, or topics. Including detailed insights, referencing their own works, or discussing the intricacies of their writing process can demonstrate expertise.

Authoritativeness:

  • Concept for Authors: An author's authority is built over time and is often tied to their body of work, recognitions, awards, and feedback from readers and peers.

  • Relation to Author Websites: An author website should prominently feature their portfolio, any awards or recognitions received, testimonials from readers or other authors, and possibly guest posts or collaborations with recognized experts in the literary world. Additionally, backlinks or mentions from reputable literary sites, magazines, or peer authors can bolster an author's online authority.

Trustworthiness:

  • Concept for Authors: Readers need to trust that an author is genuine in their storytelling or in the accuracy of the information they provide, especially if the author delves into sensitive or critical topics.

  • Relation to Author Websites: Authors can build trust by being transparent about their research sources, offering sneak peeks into their writing process, and engaging sincerely with their readers through comments, forums, or newsletters. Ensuring that the website has clear policies (such as privacy policies), and easily accessible contact information can further establish trust.

For authors aiming to rank well on Google, understanding and applying the E-E-A-T principle is crucial. It not only ensures better visibility but also helps in establishing a loyal reader base that values and trusts their content.

Food For Thought

Should We Care for Others

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4|

God calls on us to care, care for ourselves and care for others. We live by a scoreboard. Are you winning? Do you help care for others? You can’t care for others until you care for yourself, physically and spiritually. Are you too busy for God? If He wanted to whisper in your ear, could you work it into your schedule of life? Does your schedule leave time for Him? Is your life’s schedule a maze of unorganized twists and turns?

God cares for you. Listen to His calling and discover what He is calling you to do. Is He calling you to help someone today?
